10 Common Ottawa Stipple Removal Questions

1. What are the steps for Stipple Removal?

1. Setup Protective items and drop sheets
2. Sand off the Stipple using dust extractor attachment
3. Spray 3+ coats of mud onto ceiling
4. Sand fresh mud.
5. Prime ceilings
6. Perform prime check and do touch ups
7. Spot prime touched up areas
8. Paint 2 coats onto ceilings

Our technician will contain the area with drop sheets then use an orbital sander to sand off the stipple. The sander is connected to a dust extractor for minimal mess. Once the stipple is sanded off, the technician will proceed to spray 3 separate coats of mud to the ceilings. Once the mud is completely dry, the technician will sand the ceiling down to a smooth surface. They will then proceed to prime and paint x2. You will then have a stipple free home!

2. How long does Stipple ceiling Removal take?

A typical home with 1000 sq.ft of stipple could take 5 to 7 days to complete. The duration of the job depends on how many rooms and how large of an area we are working on. Once the estimate is created, we would be able to determine the length of the work.

3. What happens if my stipple ceiling tests positive for asbestos?

If you receive your asbestos results and they come back positive, there is a different method that Patchboyz would execute. We do not disturb the asbestos containing stipple, we would spray multiple coats of mud over top to encapsulate the stipple. Once the mud is set, your technician will sand that to a smooth surface. The ceiling will then be ready for primer and painting.

4. What if I have cracks – Do you do Stipple Ceiling Repair?

Yes. We definitely do stipple ceiling repairs or Popcorn Ceiling Repairs as some call them (slightly different). But in this case, this would just be a regular flat repair once we remove the stipple. We actually make the repairs mandatory as we do not want to put our name ona perfectly smooth ceiling that has cracks in it. It would not reflect well on our team. Sometimes cracks are not visible until the stipple is removed. Both parties agree and understand that these Extras must be charged and repaired for a long-lasting ceiling.

5. How messy is it?

Not messy at all when PatchBoyz does it. The traditional way of removing stipple is very messy. Most people will scrape off the stipple leaving bits all over the floor below. Patchboyz knew that they could save time by using an electric sander and connect it to a HEPA-filter eeee for minimal mess.

6. Do I have to remove my furniture?

Yes. Unlike painting, we really need to get under every square inch of ceiling. Like any job site, it is ideal to have a clean workspace. Patchboyz asks that the clients have their furniture removed from each room to prevent any tripping hazards.

7. Can I be in the house when they are working?

No. Not in the work area. It is not advised that you remain in the home while the technician is working. You can absolutely return home at the end of each day. While the technician is working, the site is considered a construction zone and only trained professionals should be present. This is for the safety of the homeowner as well as for the technicians.

8. When can I move in after the job is done?

Immediately after completion. You can move right back in as soon as the job is completed. Patchboyz uses Low VOC (Volatile organic compound) which is safe for the homeowners.

9. How much lead time do you need?

We ask that you let us know as soon as possible for scheduling. Patchboyz does not hold any spots. Once the estimate is accepted, the office will book you into the next available time slot.

10. Will I lose ceiling height?

No. There is no noticeable difference in ceiling height. At the most it would be ¼ inch difference.

11. Can I still do it if I have high ceilings?

Yes, Patchboyz is equipped to remove stipple from high ceilings. For us to prepare for the job, this information should be given during the quoting process. This also avoids any unexpected charges to the client.
