Ottawa Mold Factors
Ottawa’s hot, humid summers and cold winters bring many opportunities for fungal contamination in your property. Whether it be from lack of ventilation, condensation build up due to temperature fluctuations or a damaged water/sewage line from a cold snap, mold can contaminate occupied areas of your building and cause serious health effects.
Our team can assess any signs of mold growth promptly to prevent health risks and structural damage. Regular inspections, proper moisture control and hygiene can help safeguard your property from mold infestations. It is essential to address mold issues promptly to prevent health risks and further property damage. Our certified mold remediation technicians not only remove existing mold but also implement strategies to improve air quality and reduce moisture levels.
Rest assured that we are aware of both spellings of the word mold/mould. We use the spelling “mould” in most of our technical reporting and any identification investigations. After all, it’s the correct spelling in Canada but can be geographically influenced, to which the spelling “mold” is more common amongst laypeople.
If you are researching mold remediation contractors, it's likely you've found visible mold or can see staining/moisture infiltration from water damage. First, please eliminate the source of moisture, turn off any supply lines to the area and re-direct any drainage or rainwater runoff away from the property. Mold requires a source of moisture to flourish and elimination of any moisture will limit growth. Next, call us to have a technician visit your property and assess. They will also search for any moisture sources to prevent further damage if you cannot determine where the source is.

"Jud called to let us know he would be exactly 2 minutes late. I thought this to be quite funny. Thank you so much for coming to my home to remove the asbestos from our vents, or “boots” as you taught us. Your timeliness was of the utmost important to have our furnace replaced. I wouldn’t hesitate to call you again.

Most residential mold remediation projects in Ottawa can be completed in 1–3 days, but that doesn't necessarily mean your home will be completely put back together in three days.
At PatchBoyz, we give Ottawa homeowners two timelines: when the mold remediation will be complete and when the affected area will be fully rebuilt.
The actual remediation—setting up containment, removing contaminated materials and HEPA cleaning the affected area—can be relatively quick. Larger areas, hidden mold, extensive demolition or materials that still need to dry can extend the remediation to several days or longer.
The timeline also depends heavily on the home and the source of the moisture. In older Glebe and Westboro homes, we may be dealing with older construction, finished basements or previous renovations that conceal the extent of the problem. In Kanata, we frequently see mold associated with finished basements, bathrooms, attics and hidden moisture behind drywall. What initially looks like a small area can sometimes extend considerably farther once the affected materials are opened.
There is an important distinction between remediation and reconstruction. Once the mold has been removed and the area is dry, drywall, insulation, flooring, trim and paint may still need to be replaced. That reconstruction is a separate stage and can add additional days to the project.
It shouldn't—but mold can return if the moisture problem that caused it wasn't properly corrected or contaminated materials were missed during the original remediation.
At PatchBoyz, we consider finding and correcting the moisture source just as important as remediating the mold itself. Removing contaminated drywall without fixing the leaking pipe, condensation, ventilation problem or water intrusion behind it only solves half the problem.
This is particularly important throughout Ottawa and Eastern Ontario because some moisture problems can be seasonal. Whether we're working in Ottawa, Carleton Place, Smiths Falls or Kingston, an attic condensation problem may appear to disappear during warmer weather only to return once cold weather arrives. Basement moisture, foundation leaks and condensation can also appear intermittently, making it important to understand why the materials became wet in the first place.
It's also important to distinguish between mold “coming back” and new mold growth. Mold spores naturally exist in the environment. Proper remediation removes the existing contamination; it doesn't make your home permanently incapable of growing mold. If materials become wet again, new mold can develop.
If mold repeatedly returns in the same location after remediation, don't just clean it again. That's a strong indication that the moisture source—or part of the original contamination—may not have been fully addressed.
Professional mold remediation is a controlled process designed to remove contaminated materials without spreading mold and contaminated dust throughout the rest of your home.
If we're removing moldy drywall inside your home, you shouldn't see a technician simply walk in and start cutting drywall. Containment comes first. Depending on the size and severity of the project, the work area may be isolated with polyethylene barriers and placed under negative pressure using HEPA-filtered equipment.
At PatchBoyz, the process generally follows these steps: identify and correct the moisture source, establish containment, remove materials that cannot be saved, HEPA-clean the remaining surfaces, dry the area and inspect the completed work. Testing or independent post-remediation verification may also be appropriate depending on the project.
During removal, contaminated drywall, insulation and other materials are carefully removed from the contained area rather than carried uncovered through the home. Materials that can remain, such as structural framing, are cleaned as required.
For homeowners throughout Ottawa, including Stittsville and Orléans, the final step is often something they don't initially think about: putting the house back together. Once remediation is complete and the area is ready for reconstruction, damaged insulation, drywall, trim and paint may need to be replaced.
Because PatchBoyz specializes in both mold remediation and drywall, we can take a project from containment and removal through to drywall repair and reconstruction rather than leaving the homeowner with an opened wall and another contractor to find.
Often, yes—but it depends on whether the mold remediation work area can be safely isolated from the part of the home you're occupying.
For a smaller project that can be properly contained, you may be able to remain in another part of the house while remediation is underway. The affected area is isolated with containment barriers and, when appropriate, negative air and HEPA filtration are used to help prevent contaminated dust and airborne particles from spreading outside the work area.
At PatchBoyz, we don't make the decision based on the size of the mold problem alone. We also consider where the mold is located, whether the work area can be effectively contained, whether the home's HVAC system is involved, and who will be occupying the house during the work.
For example, a contained basement remediation may allow the family to remain upstairs. Whether we're working in Ottawa or elsewhere in Eastern Ontario, including Cornwall and Hawkesbury, the same principle applies: if the contaminated area can be effectively isolated from the occupied portion of the home, you may not need to move out. A project affecting multiple areas of the house—or one where contamination involves the HVAC system—may make temporary relocation the better option.
Extra precautions should also be considered when the home is occupied by children, seniors, pregnant people, or people with asthma, respiratory conditions or weakened immune systems. Pets should also be kept away from the remediation area behind closed doors.
Before work begins, PatchBoyz will explain the containment plan and whether we believe you can reasonably remain in the unaffected portion of your home or should arrange to stay somewhere else temporarily.
No. Mold testing is not always necessary before mold remediation—and we don't recommend paying for testing when it won't change what needs to be done.
At PatchBoyz, our position is simple: test when the results will affect the remediation plan—not simply because mold testing is available.
If mold is clearly visible, the affected materials can be identified and the source of the moisture is known, testing may add unnecessary cost. The priority is to correct the moisture problem and properly remove or clean the affected materials.
From our experience in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario homes, we frequently encounter mold associated with basement moisture, plumbing or roof leaks, bathroom moisture and attic condensation. When the mold and its moisture source are obvious, identifying the exact species often doesn't change what needs to be removed.
There are exceptions. Testing becomes much more valuable when you suspect mold but can't see it, the extent of the contamination is unclear, you need documentation for an insurance claim or real estate transaction, or there is a specific reason to identify what is present.
Testing can also be useful after a larger remediation project to independently verify that the work was successful.
Mold removal refers to physically removing mold and contaminated materials. Mold remediation is the complete process used to address the mold problem and the conditions that caused it.
In other words, mold removal is usually one part of mold remediation. Removing contaminated drywall, insulation or other materials may eliminate the visible mold, but professional remediation goes further by identifying the moisture source, establishing containment, preventing cross-contamination, removing affected materials, HEPA-cleaning the area and properly drying the structure.
At PatchBoyz, we don't consider a mold problem solved simply because the visible mold is gone. If the moisture problem that allowed the mold to grow isn't corrected, new mold can develop—even after contaminated materials have been removed.
The terms mold removal and mold remediation are often used interchangeably by homeowners and contractors throughout Eastern Ontario. Whether we're working in Ottawa, Brockville or communities along the St. Lawrence River corridor, the practical difference isn't the terminology on the estimate—it's the scope of work being performed.
A proper remediation plan should address three things: what caused the mold, how the contamination will be safely removed, and what needs to be done to prevent the same conditions from returning.
