We Match Stipple Ceilings in Toronto - Every day!

By Jud Menshal | Jan 20 2024 | Popcorn Ceiling Repair

We Get Around

Not only do home-owners call us... A lot of Contractors call us when it comes down to fixing popcorn ceilings in Toronto, and to be honest, we don't blame them. Having the right equipment and experience is everything when it comes to Stipple ceiling repairs. It can make the difference between a potential home buyer walking past a stipple repair undetected and the buyer uttering an "Oh My God That's ugly". Over the years we've honed our skills and practiced our craft enough to say that we're the best.

We have seasoned Toronto drywall contractors and taping companies that spray this stuff brand new, but do not want to try matching old. And we can’t blame them. No one wants to do their best only to have a client say they aren’t satisfied.

While we’ve become very good at this, we believe that communication is also a big part of what we do. Make sure that clients understand that there is no such thing as a perfect stipple match and that the results vary from 85% to 95% match, and often times, the match is not visible at all, and other times, it is a little bit noticeable. Setting expectations at the beginning is important as this gives the client time to explore other avenues such as removing all the stipple in the home, which is MUCH more expensive but definitely still an option.

Why Is It So Hard To Match Stipple?

Before and after picture of a popcorn ceiling repair in the greater Toronto area

Sometimes the texture used was from a batch that differed from what is available today. Sometimes A ceiling is too wavy to get a similar match or grease / nicotine stains prevent proper adhesion.

Matching the Texture is one thing but matching the colour is something entirely different. Feathering our custom white paint out past the perimeter of the patch gives us the best possible match without matching the paint or painting the full ceilings. Many of our clients have us paint the entire ceiling for them to ensure this repair is as invisible as possible.

We Created Our Own Matching Paint Colour

Over time, PatchBoyz worked with Sherwin Williams to create a custom white that is not too bright and not too dim and seems to match many ceilings. A guaranteed paint match is not something we promise our clients, however. Even if we're hired to source and match your existing paint, we always remind our clients that while we can match colour, we cannot match age. This is to say that the paint currently on your walls will have a different hue to what will come out of the can. If the walls were painted over a year ago, your chances of a perfect match reduce substantially. Same goes for an area near a window or semi-gloss or Glossy paints. These paints reveal imperfections for a living!

What Is Stipple Made Of?

Clients sometimes ask us what stipple is comprised of. Stipple is a texture mixed with paint. Once the ceiling has been primed, we spray this mixture out of a gun and hopper directly onto the ceiling. Executing this step requires some setup and preparation. A containment must be built around that area as these guns don't shoot a direct stream but rather spray very wide with pieces of texture spitting out at different intensities, some making it to the ceiling and some not.

Stipple In A Can At Home Depot

Picture of the ratings of the HOMAX popcorn ceiling texture aeroson in a can from home depot. Dissapointment.

"I saw there is Stipple in a can at Home Depot." This was a brilliant idea, but unfortunately the nozzle on the can doesn't allow you to match the stipple on your ceiling. Should you be leaning this route, we highly recommend you read some discussion boards online to see other people's experience with this. We get calls on a weekly basis from people that tried doing things with a can with less than lacklustre results. We understand… we've tried these cans….
